CIBSE-Approved Continuing Professional Development (CPDs)

SPC offers a range of continuing professional development (CPD) courses and presentations.

SPC offers four CIBSE-approved CPD sessions covering radiant heating and cooling, trench heating design, decarbonisation of commercial and industrial heating systems, and coil heat exchangers. Each session lasts approximately one hour and is available to architects, mechanical consultants, and mechanical contractors across the UK.

Sessions can be delivered at your office or virtually. SPC has been delivering CIBSE-approved CPDs since 1997 and is a Leicester-based manufacturer of the heating and cooling products covered in each session.

Radiant Heating & Cooling Panels - Fundamentals and Design Guide

Radiant panels heat and cool spaces by transferring energy directly to surfaces and occupants rather than warming the air. This session explains the science behind radiant heat transfer, how SPC’s panels are constructed, and how to design systems that work effectively with heat pumps and low water temperature sources. Suitable for projects in commercial offices, education, healthcare, and residential developments where occupant comfort and energy efficiency are priorities.

Duration: Approx 1 hour
Suitable for: Architects, Mechanical Consultants, Mechanical Contractors

CPD content:
Modes of Heat Transfer
Radiant Heat Transfer & Intensity
Panel Construction
Benefits of Radiant Heat
Benefits of Radiant Cooling
Heat Pumps & Radiant
Applications in Commercial & Residential
Controls

Design Considerations for Trench Heating

Trench heating is a practical and architecturally discreet solution for perimeter heating, particularly where floor-to-ceiling glazing creates cold downdrafts. This session covers the fundamentals of system selection, correct sizing, grille specification, and control options, drawing on SPC’s experience supplying trench heating to commercial, residential, and heritage projects across the UK.

Duration: Approx 1 hour
Suitable for: Architects, Mechanical Consultants, Mechanical Contractors

CPD content:
Introduction
What is Trench Heating?
Types of Trench Heating Systems
Where to use Trench Heating?
How to size Trench Heating
Types of control options for energy efficiency
Installation considerations and options
Grille Choices

Decarbonisation of Industrial and Commercial Heating Systems

As the UK moves towards net zero, mechanical engineers and consultants are increasingly required to specify heating systems that reduce carbon emissions without compromising performance. This session covers the current state of renewable energy in the UK, how heat pumps interact with low temperature emitters, Embodied Carbon assessment under TM65, and available funding mechanisms to support decarbonisation projects.

Duration: Approx 1 hour
Suitable for: Architects, Mechanical Consultants, Mechanical Contractors

CPD content:
Gain insights into the current status and future of renewable energy in the UK
Learn how Heat pumps can reduce carbon emissions when implementing low temperature heating systems
Optimise heat emitter design and controls for efficient and comfortable heating at low temperatures
Understand Embodied Carbon (TM65)
Discover available funding options

An Introduction to Coil Heat Exchangers

Heat exchanger coils are found in a wide range of HVAC systems, from air handling units to fan coil units and packaged plant. This session introduces the core principles of how coils transfer heat to or from an airstream, the different fluid options available, and how coils are selected and engineered for specific performance requirements. Relevant to any project involving AHUs, heat recovery, or bespoke coil specification.

Duration: Approx 1 hour
Suitable for: Architects, Mechanical Consultants, Mechanical Contractors

CPD content:
Understanding the purpose of coils and their applications
How coils transfer heat to or from an airstream
Exploring heat transfer fluid options
How coils are engineered for different applications
Key considerations for performance and efficiency
An overview of electric heater batteries and their uses

Which CPD Suits Your Project?

Not sure which session is most relevant to your current work? Use the below as a useful guide:

Radiant Heating and Cooling Panels are best suited to projects where occupant comfort, low surface temperatures, or heat pump integration are key design considerations. Particularly relevant to schools, healthcare facilities, commercial offices, and low-energy residential schemes.

Design Considerations for Trench Heating is most relevant when specifying perimeter heating beneath glazed facades, or on heritage and residential projects where concealed heating solutions are required. Also useful where architectural constraints limit wall or ceiling-mounted options.

An Introduction to Coil Heat Exchangers is relevant across a wide range of project types. If your project involves air handling equipment, heat recovery, or bespoke coil selection for ventilation or process applications, this session provides the technical grounding to specify with confidence.

Decarbonisation of Industrial and Commercial Heating Systems is the right starting point for engineers working on net zero projects, heat pump system design, or any scheme where the client has a carbon reduction target. Covers both the technical and financial aspects of decarbonisation.
